Armide / The Israeli Opera / Christoph Willibald Gluck / Avshalom Pollak & Inbal Pinto / Sebastian Rouland)

Gluck’s “Armide,” which was first performed in Paris in 1777, is set in Damascus during the time of the Crusades. Armide is the Princess of Damascus who falls in love with the Crusader knight Renaud, the leader of the army occupying her city. She tries to shake off this love and recruits an entire world of fantasy creatures to help her – nymphs and spirits. They do not help her and she turns to Hatred to save her from her love. Then Armide changes her mind and decides to preserve her love, but in her anger, she ultimately destroys everything around her.
